Tucked Close to the Heart of Jesus

23 Oct

We live in the town of Escazu, which is a lovely suburb of San Jose, Costa Rica.  The city’s “motto” is The City of Witches.  I’ve asked all around to try to find out why it’s called that.  I’ve heard many stories:  The women are strong here.  When people first saw the Jewish people celebrating shabbat they thought they were doing witchcraft.  There’s a legend that a flying witch lives on top of the mountain.

However, the simplest and most believable story that keeps cropping up is that Escazu is very welcoming to witches.  The town is broken up into many neighborhoods, most of which are named after the Catholic church in the middle of each neighborhood–St. Michaels, St. Antonio, etc.  We live in a neighborhood that is right above San Miguel (Saint Michaels) called El Corazon de Jesus (The Heart of Jesus).  Interesting, eh?  I think this is a metaphor for where most of us live:  The world system surrounds us, but we are tucked under His wing near the Heart of Jesus.  Amen.

Show me the wonders of your great love,
you who save by your right hand
those who take refuge in you from their foes.
Keep me as the apple of your eye;
hide me in the shadow of your wings
from the wicked who are out to destroy me,
from my mortal enemies who surround me. (Psalm 17)
