A smile of encouragement at the right moment may act like sunlight on a closed-up flower; it may be the turning point for a struggling life.
I’ve been thinking about the verse we looked at the other day:
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 1 Peter 1:3
I think that babies are a kind of object lesson for a living hope. When my father died, it was my baby, Doug, who helped us deal with it. He laughed, gurgled, crawled, and needed to be taken care of. Life HAD to go on. Holding him was like holding hope. Last week we went through a family crisis and it was my granddaughter, Georgia, who helped me deal with it. A baby has so much potential, so many possibilities. How could I feel hopeless when holding her?
Feeling hopeless? Find a baby. And meditate on the resurrection of Jesus Christ!
