Fear Speaks

30 Jan

God! Look! Enemies past counting! Enemies sprouting like mushrooms,
Mobs of them all around me, roaring their mockery:
“Hah! No help for him from God!”  Psalm 3:1,2 The Message

One of the best books I’ve read on fear is Running Scared:  Fear, Worry, and the God of Rest by Edward T. Welch.  This post comes from the chapter on Fear Speaks.

It’s important that we know that fear speaks to us and we need to listen.  According to Dr. Welch fear can speak the following things:

  • I’m in danger.
  • I’m vulnerable.
  • I need (and I might not get) something.
  • I’m needy, body and soul.
  • This is valuable to me (and I could lose it).
  • I could die.

I found the section on I need (and I might not get) something VERY interesting.  Look at some examples given:

  • If we need comfort, we will fear physical pain.
  • If we need approval from others, we will fear being criticized.
  • If we need love, we will fear rejection.
  • If we need admiration for our attractiveness, we will fear getting fat.

We need to listen to our fears.  Many times they will show us our priorities–in fact, I might go so far as to say that they can reveal our idols.

Fear speaks.  Listen.
