Fear of Loneliness

Covering, sweet covering

Loneliness is linked to our fears–fear of death, fear of aging, fear of intimacy, fear of revealing ourselves as we are to others.  I was looking at the definition for loneliness in my favorite 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language, and interestingly enough there were two definitions:  1) solitude, retirement, seclusion from company; and 2) the love or addiction to retirement and solitude.

But God has coverings for us.  Coverings that take away our separation from others caused by our self-consciousness.  We instinctively know we need covering, as did Adam and Eve in the garden when they became self-conscious and grabbed up the nearest fig leaves to cover themselves with.  But did they grab the best covering or an inadequate covering?

I think of a bus that was robbed in the mountains of Ecuador.  To give themselves more time to escape, the robbers made the passengers strip and took their clothing with them.  The passengers fashioned clothing of a sort from the bobble-edged red velvet curtains.  Adequate covering?  I don’t think so.  About as good as the fig leaves.  But we have three amazing coverings to take advantage of that will take away our loneliness and fear.

1.  Jesus is our covering.  He never wants us to be alone again.  He promises never to leave us or forsake us.  (Hebrews 13:5)  He never stops walking with us, but sometimes we lose the sense of His presence and we find ourselves lonely and fearful.  Jeremiah 29:13 says we will find him when we search with all our hearts.

2.  Love is our covering.  This covering includes some huge things, coverings of mercy, forgiveness, grace, and the ability to rebound like a tennis ball when we fall.  All because love covers a multitude of sins.  (1 Peter 4:8)  Included in this marvelous gift is the covering of our husbands (Eph. 5:23)

3.  The Word of God is our covering.  The sword of the Spirit is the Word of God.  (Ephesians 6:17)  Remember that Jesus used the Word of God to defeat the enemy:  It is written.  This was His covering and it is ours as well.  We need to seek to understand it so we too can say, “It is written.”  God lovingly gives teachers and pastors to help us learn and apply the Word of God in our lives.  (Ephesians 4:11)

Snuggle under these more than adequate coverings to feel protected, loved, and never alone.

Thank you. My husband says I’m becoming obsessed with photographing flowers, and I think he’s not far off. Now I want a better camera and more knowledge about photography.
Jesus is my covering, He is in me, He surrounds me. How can I be lonely?
