Perfect Love Casts Out Fear Part 1

25 Sep

We’re going to examine 1 John 4:15-21 with the goal of providing a context for verse 18 where it says perfect love casts out fear. Let’s begin with verse 15:

Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.

This is one of the most comforting verses in the Bible. It starts out with whoever. That “whoever” means just what it says.  We don’t need to qualify, we don’t need to measure up to anyone’s standards, we just need to “confess that Jesus is the Son of God”.  Sometimes we get hung up and think we’re not good enough, but the word “whoever” just throws its arms open in welcome to anyone and everyone.  In this way, someone like me—I was SUCH a mess when I came to Christ—can enter into God’s family.

How?  Through confessing that Jesus is the Son of God.  Confess means to come to an agreement, to own, and to speak the same words.  We agree with God that Jesus is His Son.  If He is His Son he also is God.  We “own” this truth as our own.  These words imply surrender to God.  Can’t you picture it?  We throw our hands up like they do in those war movies and give ourselves up to Him.  Only he’s not the enemy, He loves us more than anyone else possibly could and only wants what’s good for us.

You don’t have to have a lot of theological knowledge to do this.  When I did it, I simply said, “If you’re real, I need you.”  God knew that was my surrender.  It was all I knew to say, and He came into my life so powerfully.

Which leads us to the last point.  The amazing result of this surrender is that God comes to live in us forever and we live in Him forever.  It’s like we’ve put out the welcome mat to our heart when we surrender to Him and He not only comes to make himself at home in our hearts, but also tucks us into His home.  The tense this is written in is very strong and means that God accomplishes this action which is occurring now.  So now, right now, as a result of our agreement with God, He lives in us, and we in Him.  It makes me want to break into praise when I think of the God who created the whole universe living in my heart.
