The thistle has an efficient seed dispersal system, but in order for that system to function the thistle must die. The thistle symbolizes noble birth, but until it produces seed to reproduce itself it has not achieved its destiny.
We need to decrease so that Jesus may increase in us. We will not achieve our purpose if we do not die to ourselves, become more like Christ, and reproduce ourselves by spreading seeds of our knowledge of Him. People can see Christ working through our lives and turn to Him when we die to ourselves, allow Jesus to shine through us, and allow the wind of the Holy Spirit to manage the seed dispersal.
Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. John 12:23-25
