Speak to Those With Fearful Hearts Part 2

6 Sep

The desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose.

Say to those with fearful hearts,
       “Be strong, do not fear;
       your God will come,
       he will come with vengeance;
       with divine retribution
       he will come to save you.” Isaiah 35:4 NIV

What are we to tell these fearful hearts?

  • Be strong.  It’s written as a command, which means that it is possible–through Christ who strengthens us.
  • Do not fear. We’ve talked about the Hebrew word, yare, before.  In its negative sense it means the emotional and intellectual anticipation of what might go wrong.  In other words, we need to live in the present.  That can be difficult.  I often almost have to literally wrench my head back to the here and now and away from the then and future.

I read a lovely quote about being present this morning in Captivating by John & Stasi Eldridge:

Now we should live when the pulse of life is strong.  Life is a tenuous thing . . .fragile, fleeting.  Don’t wait for tomorrow.  Be here now!  Be here now!  Be here now!
