Fix Your Eyes on Jesus

9 Jun

When one of my sons was in high school, we went through a season of early morning Bible studies.  Actually it was part of being disciplined for something or other, but although it was disciplinary I tried to make it as nice as possible with breakfast and hot chocolate on the couch in the living room as we studied.

The book we studied (I simply cannot remember the title nor the author), spoke of walking down the middle of a street, with temptation hollering from the buildings lining the street–and I mean hanging out the windows and yelling for us to come.  Jesus was at the end of the street beckoning us forward, and as long as we kept our eyes on him we were fine.  When we looked toward the temptation, we began to veer from the center of the road.

I thought about that word picture in terms of my temptation to worry.  What are some of the temptations that are hollering at you?  Here’s a few of mine:

  • “Your family doesn’t understand why you are on the mission field,” Temptation shouts.
  • “They may even resent you,”  sneers Temptation.
  • “That someone you love will NEVER change!” Temptation jeers.
  • “Why bother hoping that your health will improve?” yells Temptation.

Looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus, Who is the Leader and the Source of our faith [giving the first incentive for our belief] and is also its Finisher [bringing it to maturity and perfection].  Hebrews 12:2a Ampl.
